Prof. Willem H Ouwehand
Overview
CV
Willem H Ouwehand is University of Cambridge Professor of Experimental Haematology, holds honorary appointments at Cambridge University Hospitals, NHS Blood and Transplant and the Welcome Sanger Institute and is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He leads several research groups in the Department of Haematology at the University and collaborates with colleagues at the Sanger Institute and the EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute. The program of research in megakaryocyte and platelet biology and genomics focuses on the relationship between sequence variation in genes and the volume, count and function of platelets. This knowledge is translated into the clinic by developing comprehensive DNA tests to improve the diagnosis of inherited bleeding, thrombotic and platelet disorders. As a founder of the NIHR BioResource, Willem has coordinated the whole-genome sequencing pilot study for Rare Diseases for the 100,000 Genomes Project.
He lives in London and Cambridge and is married to Sally with whom he has two daughters.
