Dr Chan is now working as the Deputy Chief in the Division of Joint Replacement Surgery, Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology, Queen Mary Hospital. He is an orthopaedic specialist known for his expertise in managing arthritic conditions and joint replacement surgeries. Apart from expertise in primary joint replacement surgery, he is also keen on complex and revision joint replacement surgeries. He had overseas training and acquired the surgical skills and techniques in distinguished joint replacement centres in Asia, Europe & Australia, and he takes frequent referrals from other centres for managing difficult and challenging joint replacement surgery.
Dr Chan led the multi-disciplinary team, consisting of anesthesiologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses, in overseas training in world-renowned osteoarthritic and fast-track joint replacement centres in Europe in 2015. After the training, several pioneering programmes in Hong, including multi-disciplinary non-surgical management programme of knee osteoarthritis in MacLehose Medical Rehabilitation Centre, and multi-disciplinary fast-track joint replacement programmes in Queen Mary Hospital, were commenced with success. In his leadership, his team titled “Comprehensive Osteoarthritis Management Team - Transforming Pain into Happiness in Patients with Osteoarthritis” won the 2018 Hong Kong West Cluster Outstanding Team Award in the Hospital Authority. With the promotion of these concepts through talks, lectures and media by his team, various hospitals have begun to run similar programmes in Hong Kong.
Dr Chan is also a keen clinician-researcher. He has been invited as speakers in scientific congress in Asia, Europe and Australia. His scientific presentations won several distinguished local awards including the Best Oral Presentation Award in 2018 Hospital Authority Convention, the Best Oral Presentation Award in the 25th Anniversary Congress of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, and the Arthur Yau Award for Best Clinical Paper in the Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association 33rd and 35th Annual Congress. His team also recently awarded a Donation of HKD 20.27 Million from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (HKJCCT) in 2017 for the establishment of an Integrated one-stop clinic with multi-disciplinary services at MacLehose Medical Rehabilitation Centre.
