Prof. Gilberto Leung

Professor Gilberto K. K. Leung is an academic neurosurgeon, a Clinical Professor, and the holder of the endowed Tsang Wing-Hing Professorship in Clinical Neuroscience at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). He graduated from the Medical College of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, with M.B.B.S., and the University College London with BSc (Physical Anthropology) in 1992. During his surgical training in the UK, US and Hong Kong, he was awarded the Hallett Gold Medal by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the J. Douglas Miller Medal in Neurosurgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He joined HKU in 2005 where he obtained two doctorate degrees of MS and a PhD. He holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Medical Law and Ethics from the University of Edinburgh with Distinction and the McLagan Prize for Best Graduate.
He currently serves as the Vice-President (Education and Examinations) of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, and the Chairman of the Academy’s Education Committee. He is the Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning) of his Faculty. He is also the Region XVI Chief (Asia-Australasia) of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Programme of the American College of Surgeons, and a Governor of the College’s China-Hong Kong Chapter. He teaches as a traveling faculty in low-/middle-income countries for the Asian Australasian Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
He provides clinical service as an Honorary Consultant Neurosurgeon at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong. His clinical and research interests include endoscopic skull base surgery, neurotrauma, molecular biology of brain tumours, neuroregenerative therapy as well as medical education, law and ethics. He has supervised 12 past or current post-graduate students, focusing on clinical and translational researches in neuroscience. He has authored/co-authored 143 peer-reviewed journal articles, 9 book chapters, 2 monographs, 117 conference papers, 46 other publications, and delivered 93 invited lectures.
