Dr. Lai has over 30 years of clinical experience in the field of intensive care. He was graduated in 1981 from the Medical Faculty of the University of Hong Kong. He was trained in internal medicine and become specialized in the field of intensive care in 1989. He was the consultant of the intensive care unit of Queen Elizabeth Hospital since 1994. He was promoted to the Chief of Service of the Intensive care unit of Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 2010 up to his retirement in 2017. His main research interest is on influenza virus infection, in particular the pathogenesis of the W-shaped mortality of 1918 H1N1 Spanish influenza virus and 2009 novel H1N1 pandemic virus and the cytokine dysregulation of avian influenza viruses. He has written article on the theoretical role of currently available agents targeting host cell factors in the management of human Ebola virus infection.
