Introduction :
Building a team of committed staff and a happy and caring environment is one the value and vision of HA. A staff health promotion program was launched in 4Q 18 in HHH to nurture healthy life style of our staff and promote flu vaccination..
Objectives :
1. To promote health awareness of staff 2. To encourage staff to develop health life style
3. To promulgate effective and safe exercise strategies
4. To promote awareness and enhance knowledge in flu vaccination
Methodology :
The 2 days program consisted of 7 health promotion booths: (1) Body check by nurses (2) Physical fitness assessment by physiotherapists (3) Education on flu vaccination by Pharmacists (4) Healthy diet education and anthropometric assessment by dietitians (5) Flu vaccination promotion by infection control nurses (6) Mental health education by Critical Incident Support Team. (7) Stroke prevention. Health status was evaluated through body check, anthropometric and physical fitness assessment. Education and key messages were conveyed to participants through games and fun approach. Health and physical assessment include blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), fat percentage (FP), hand grip strength (HGS), sit and reach (SAR) test for hamstring flexibility (HF), single leg standing (SLS) balance test and 3 minutes step test for cardiopulmonary fitness. The figures with interpretation were marked in a health diary which was given to the staff for reference and as a reminder for attaining healthy life style. Staff with high health risk are identified and advised for further investigation.
Result & Outcome :
120 staff attended the program and 52 staff completed the physical assessment and provided their demographic information. HGS of 78 % of subjects were below average (N=35). HF of 51% of subjects (N= 20) were found below average in SAR test. SLS balance of 67% of subjects (N= 28) were found more prone to fall. Cardiopulmonary fitness of 65% of subjects (N=26) were below average. According to the BMI results, 4% of subjects were underweight (N=2) while 29% of them were overweight (N=13). For FP, 81% and 29% of female and male participants exceeded recommendation of American Dietetic Association respectively. 21 staff received vaccination within the 2 staff health day. 7 staff were advised to seek medical consultation because of high BP. Conclusion
SHPP was welcome by the staff and is effective to arouse their health awareness and enhance their acceptance to receive flu vaccination. Base on the results of the health assessments, more specific programs can be planned and designed to improve the fitness and health of staff which might focus on hamstring flexibility, upper limb muscle strength balance, weight reduction and cardiopulmonary fitness. These parameters are known to be related to MHO and STFF injuries.
