Introduction :
Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis is a mimica of gallbladder malignancy in imaging and gross appearance. Clinically patient presents as acute cholecystitis or right hypochondriacal pain. Macroscopically, the gallbladder appears to be enlarged with thickened wall. There are yellowish mass forming lesions. Therefore gallbladder is often sent as frozen section specimen intraoperatively to determine the nature of specimen.
Objectives :
To evaluate the accuracy of the frozen section diagnosis among the cases of xanthogranulomatous inflammation in gallbladder.
Methodology :
In United Christian Hospital, 11 frozen section cases over 12-year-period(2007 to 2018) which are histologically confirmed as xanthogranulomatous inflammation were identified in retrospective analysis.
Result & Outcome :
The study included 10 male and 1 female (male to female ratio = 10:1 ) having a mean age of 62.5 years (56 to 74 years). 10 of which received a diagnosis of “negative for malignancy” during frozen section, while 1 case was deferred for paraffin section. Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis is an uncommon pathology in gallbladder. Frozen section is a useful tool to determine the nature of gallbladder pathology.
