Introduction :
Several studies showed that 68% of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis continued to progress upon adult. 15%-30% of normal adult would develop degenerative lumbar scoliosis. Both groups were classified as adult scoliosis. Among adult scoliosis, 61% developed spinal pain. In Physiotherapy Scoliosis-Specific Exercise program, Schroth scoliosis exercise, a world-wide asymmetrical trunk exercise therapy originated from Germany has shown effective in preventing curve progression in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, yet very few studies have evaluated its effectiveness in adult scoliosis.
Objectives :
To evaluate the Physiotherapy Scoliosis-Specific Exercise program for adult scoliosis in (1) controlling pain; (2) preventing curve-progression; (3) improving quality of life.
Methodology :
A “Pre-test” vs “ Post-test” with “ 12-month Telephone follow-up” design was employed in physiotherapy department of Tang Shiu Kin Hospital. This pilot study was analyzed with Wilcoxon signed-ranks test. Subjects recruited were (1) aged 18-70 with spinal pain, (2) Cobb angle > 10°, (3) no spinal surgery. They were taught with tailor-made Schroth scoliosis therapy, pain self-management, posture correction, activity advice and home program. Outcome measures were categorized as: (1) Health related parameters for physical function, (2) Functional activities, (3) Quality of life evaluation, (4) Satisfaction survey.
