Introduction :
Resuscitator is a core item of Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. It is classified as semi-critical item, which requires regular preventive maintenance (PM) to ensure the quality and safety without functional failure. Therefore, the annual cost for PM check of 400 pieces of reusable resuscitators in Tseung Kwan O hospital (TKOH) is around HKD$ 140000. Besides, there are difficulties in completing the PM check within the scheduled time due to different owners. There are quality assured single use resuscitators in the market which are safe and can achieve manual ventilation successfully as well as reducing the recurrent PM cost of TKOH.
Objectives :
1. Ensure patient safety without equipment failure during resuscitation. 2. Introduce quality assured single use resuscitators for the low usage clinical areas. 3. Reduce the annual PM cost.
Methodology :
1. Build up TKOH database and centralize the asset ownership for all reusable resuscitators in order to effectively and efficiently manage the PM check. 2. Clinical units, where resuscitators are used less than 5 times per year, will have the reusable resuscitator being replaced by single use resuscitators.
Result & Outcome :
1. The success rate for PM check of reusable resuscitators in 2018 was 100%. 2. In low usage clinical units, there were, in total, 89 pieces of resuscitators changed to quality assured single use resuscitators, with a lifespan of 3 years. 3. There will be a significant reduction in the annual PM checking cost (by 81.2%) in the next 3 years from replacing these 89 pieces of reusable resuscitators.
