Introduction :
Proper airway management is critical to improve patient safety and outcome in perioperative phase. Multiple approach modalities in training are found more effective than one way approach in clinical knowledge transfer. This is superior to traditional apprenticeship model of learning in operating theatre. The multiple modalities allow trainees to develop their airway management skills in progressive way within the comfortable and controlled setting.
Objectives :
(1)Enhance the competency and ability of nursing staff to cope with airway crisis. (2)To improve knowledge and skills of NDH Operating Theatre nursing staff on preparation and troubleshooting of airway equipment.(3) To run 2 to 3 classes per year with small group teaching for 8 to 10 nurses per session.
Methodology :
(1)Qualitative assessment: pre & post airway management knowledge test questionnaires, and pre &post self-rating of airway management knowledge questionnaires.(2) Multiple approach teaching modalities: self-active learning by airway management booklet before workshop; training workshop including theoretical lecture presented by anesthetist, skill enhancement session by hands-on practice and knowledge update on airway equipment by anaesthetic specialty nurse, and scenario simulating base and debriefing training for team base practice and application of airway management knowledge conducted by simulation instructors.
Result & Outcome :
Results: (1) Total18 participants were recruited in 2 classes. (2) Perceived enhancement of airway management knowledge and skills from average to good reflecting from per& post self-rating knowledge questionnaires. (3) Average score of knowledge test result significantly increased from pre-course 72 to post-course 98. (4) Good satisfaction rate to whole program: mean score more than 4.3 by the 5-points Likert-score questionnaires. Conclusion: Multiple- approached modalities airway management training program is effective to enhance nurses’ the airway management knowledge and skills. Multiple-approached modalities program serves as a platform for the participants to conduct active-self learning, knowledge update in didactic lecture and hands-on skills practices. Finally, they apply their knowledge into simulating scenario to develop their own practice. Therefore, it is worthy to run on regular basis as a refresher program.
