Introduction :
Staff are the most important asset in an organization. With greater happiness staff can achieve, they are more engaged into the job. However, research found that staff well-being can be affected by stressful working environment and stressors including peer relationships and lack of rewards. Therefore, it is crucial to create a supportive working atmosphere with love and care, positive reinforcement with consistent recognitions and strive to achieve the idea of work-life balance. This program aims to establish a happy staff program for all staff in our ward.
Objectives :
1. To foster an encouraging work environment with consistent recognitions from patients and between staff, in order to reinforce great performance and boost up staff morale 2. To cultivate a loving and caring atmosphere among staff and to enhance work engagement 3. To put the idea of work-life balance into practice through organizing different ward activities for staff and their families to join
Methodology :
1. Set up a task force workgroup for this program. 2. Review literatures to identify strategies for enhancing staff engagement and job satisfaction. 3. Design & conduct “Staff opinions survey on Happy Staff Program” to evaluate staff perceptions. 4. Program details planning by workgroup about the three strategies will be used including Ward Activities project, Birthday Angel project and Wall of Praise project. 5. Full implementation of program from June 2018 to January 2019. 6. Conduct survey and evaluate staff opinions upon this program.
Result & Outcome :
Total 28 nurses and care assistants were interviewed. More than 90% of our staff felt being cared and praised on good performance after the program. Sense of engagement at work has been enhanced for 10%. Atmosphere at work has been positively driven for about 14%. Job satisfaction and happiness at work have been significantly improved up to 21%. Happy Staff Program is effective in creating a positive and delightful working atmosphere in ward. Most of our staff felt being cared from the birthday angel project. Sense of engagement improved and relationship between colleagues were closer. All our staff agreed that consistent recognitions from patients and between colleagues are efficacious to support our staff for keeping up with good works. Majority of our nurses welcomes this program. This program will be continued and will be modified when new comments received.
