Introduction :
Preventing medication error is one of the major issues to ensure patient safety in nursing care. “Three checks Five rights” is the core principle that help nursing staff to minimize error during administration of medications (AOM). If it is applied in the ward setting, this is effective to avoid medication error. However, emergency department (ED) is different from ward setting, which is an uncontrolled environment. Abundant and movable patients in ED lead to a lot of potential pitfalls that nursing staffs need to encounter during AOM. There is a variety of unexpected scenarios that would potentially cause error during AOM. Therefore, a trouble-shoot material (scenario video) is introduced to ED to highlight the precautions of AOM in four functional areas of ED: Triage, Cubicles, Pending admission area and Resuscitation rooms in order to close the gap on it.
Objectives :
To minimize the medication error in ED by educating the nursing staffs with integrated precaution material.
Methodology :
A survey is being conducted for staffs who had seen the video so as to see how useful the video helps them to understand the pitfalls in ED on administration of medicine.
Result & Outcome :
The video helps to fill up the gap, which the existing guidelines or teaching materials do not cover in the ED environment on pitfalls of AOM.
