Introduction :
In a psychiatric admission ward, the work of nurse post 2 is bulky and complicated, e.g., checking of case notes after medical consultation; co-ordinating patient's discharge & admission procedure; and writing down clinical actions that need follow-up in next shift, etc. The work proficiency relies most on the staff's familiarity and attention. However, frequent staff rotation that may affect the work proficiency and potential clinical safety as new staff may have no experiences in handling the job task of nurse post 2. In order to enhance job competency of nurse post 2, our ward produced E201 Handbook for quick reference and learning material to nurse post 2 in case there is no senior staff around for consulting.
Objectives :
- To provide handy and quick reference for nurse post 2;
- To enhance job competency of nurse post 2'
- To reduce risk of clinical incidents related to missing or incorrect steps of clinical procedures
Methodology :
- 20 nursing staff divided into 12 groups; - each group is responsible for writing work steps for 1-2 administrative or clinical procedures that are commonly come-acrossed by summarising standard clinical procesdure and guideline;
- one APN is responsible for compiling the handbook;
- the completed handbook is placed in nursing station for staff quick reference.
Result & Outcome :
All nurses have positive feedback to the E201 Handbook as they found it useful and convenient, especially for those junior nurse and newly-joined nurse; The work proficiency of nurse post 2 is maintained with smooth hand-over in each shift. There is nil clinical incident occurred related to the work scope of nurse post 2 in our ward in the year of 2018.
