Introduction :
Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) in Physiotherapy Department of PMH play an important role in assisting physiotherapists (PTs) preparing treatment modalities and machine maintenance. Also, they have to aware and monitor patients’ general condition and ensure the patients safety during transfer tasks and rehabilitation training. A structured training program for PCAs was launched to ensure the quality and safety of our Physiotherapy service.
Objectives :
-To enhance the proper practice in preparing treatment modalities such as electrical modalities and use of patients transfer equipment
-To improve the quality of equipment & accessories maintenance -To enhance the safety awareness for assisting in treatments provided by PTs
-To develop the competencies and effectiveness of the green PCAs
Methodology :
A series of demonstrations, workshops and hands-on practical sessions leading by physiotherapists and experienced PCAs were held. The sessions were recorded by videos and reference materials for revision.
Result & Outcome :
Seven PCAs completed 9 training sessions during May to August 2018 and underwent a practical assessment including the preparation of treatment modalities and demonstration of equipment maintenance etc. The overall mean score was 72 out of 100. It was followed by a revision session in which feedback and improvement plan were provided for the PCAs. All of the PCAs regarded the empowerment program was useful and able to enhance their daily working practice. The empowerment program will be carried out annually to ensure the quality and safety of the services provided by the PCAs.
