Introduction :
Many cancer patients suffer from emotional, social, and spiritual problems during the diagnosis and treatment (Garssen et al., 2013). From March 2017 to December 2018, the the United Christian Hospital Cancer Patient Resource Center (UCH CPRC) and the Inner Music Child (IMC) have jointly organized a music therapeutic group. Through different music therapeutic activities such as symbolic song writing, singing, music jam, expressive vocal improvisation and improvisation with musical instruments, patients were able to release their negative emotions and build up social support network.
Objectives :
The major objectives of the music therapeutic group were to: (1) help patients with cancer releasing their negative emotions; and (2) build up social support network
Methodology :
Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were adopted for program evaluation. For the qualitative research, 6 in-depth interviews were conducted with cancer patients, who participated in the music therapeutic group, to obtain their narrative journal responses. For the quantitative research, total 28 questionnaires surveys were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the music therapeutic group.
Result & Outcome :
For qualitative analysis, patients agreed that they can release their negative emotions through music therapeutic activities. For quantitative analysis, about 82% of the participants strongly agreed that the music therapeutic group could help releasing their negative emotions effectively while 65% of participants shared that it could build up their social support network. The use of music therapy is effective in helping cancer patients in releasing their negative emotions and building the social support network.
