Introduction :
According to a network meta-analysis 2018, powered active air surface and powered hybrid air surfaces could reduce the pressure ulcer incidence when compared to standard hospital supporting surfaces. (Shi, 2018) Currently, there are 4 types of mattress available in GMU:
A. Low air loss mattress, B. 2 in 1 mattress type 1,
C. 2 in 1 mattress type 2, and D. air mattress The mattress selection for patients was based on knowledge and experience of nurse with supplement of mattress manufacturer manual in current practice and there was no scientific comparison for different mattresses. The pressure mapping system allows investigation of the actual pressure encountered on each type of mattress and provides information on the selection of best mattress for the right patient. Objectives :
-To compare and rank the mattress available in GMU in order of their effectiveness by using the pressure mapping system. -To enhance the selection of the mattress for GMU patients who are at risk of pressure injury.
Methodology :
1.Pressure mapping were carried out for different types of mattresses in GMU. 2.4 types of GMU owning mattresses were prioritized after discussion the mapping result with nurse and OT. 3.The best firmness scale of air mattress for different weight ranges were checked.
Result & Outcome :
1.To measure the pressure force of existing different mattresses by pressure mapping system. 2.To prioritize the risk of pressure injury development of using different mattresses. 3.To develop the procurement plan for mattress choice in the future. 1.Surprisingly the best performance among 4 type of mattress is the low air loss mattress which is different from study. 2.It is difficult to grade the remaining choice (2 in 1 mattress version 1 &2 and air mattress) since the pressure outcomes are greatly influenced and varied by the setting of firmness of air sac. 3.Corresponding firmness recommendation was set for different weight range for those air mattresses in which their firmness could be adjusted. 4.Patients spend most of their time in bed during hospitalization especially for those patients in high risk of pressure injury. Instead of choosing the mattress solely from study or product catalogue, the actual trial on clients and measurement by pressure mapping are necessary in order to ensure the patient satisfaction and pressure relieving ability.
