Introduction :
Obesity has been on the rise across the globe. Its metabolic, respiratory and orthopaedic complications burden the society progressively. Earlier development of obesity during childhood and adolescence is evident.
Objectives :
To examine the effectiveness of a weight management programme in a local paediatric unit.
Methodology :
Retrospective chart review of the body parameters, body fat composition and metabolic markers of all clinic registrants at entry and 12-month clinic visit.
Result & Outcome :
Of the younger age group (15 years of age or younger), there was improvement in body mass index, body fat composition and some metabolic markers. Other metabolic markers also showed the trend of improvement. However, the results were converse in the older age group. Conclusion: weight management is effective in younger adolescents and children. Behavioural measures should be more introduced to stimulate the motivation of the older group of adolescents.
