Introduction :
Ineffective delivery of health educational materials to patients would lead to have poor rehabilitation outcome, higher dependency in patients’ activity of daily living, and even increase the length of stay.
Objectives :
(1) To deliver the health educational materials effectively and accurately. (2) To enhance the convenient access of health educational materials at anytime and anywhere. (3) To facilitate the storage, conformity, and update of educational materials within department.
Methodology :
Implementation of QR code program in Department of Orthopaedic Rehabilitation was started in Oct 2018, and briefing sessions were conducted to staffs. The QR codes were generated and linked with department’s reviewed/new educational pamphlets and videos systematically. The codes were published in posters and displayed in lift lobbies and ward corridors for patients and visitors to access. In the meantime, the QR code stickers with related topics of educational materials were affixed on their nursing discharge summary to facilitate patients and their relatives accessing the specific information accurately even they discharged home.
Outcome measures were categorized as: (1) QR codes utilization and cost data, (2) Satisfaction survey.
Result & Outcome :
From October 2018 to December 2018, 1057 click of QR codes were served to public. There was 77% decreased in delivery of paper educational materials (with net saving of HK$317.10 per quarter). Over 98% of staffs agreed that utilization of QR codes could enhance efficiency in patient and staff education, and 91% of patients and visitors were satisfied the access of educational materials by scanning of QR codes with their digital devices. Conclusions:
The QR code program was effective in delivery of health educational materials. Using QR codes is advantageous to connect patient and staff’s education and training, thereby increasing the flexibility and accuracy for providing educational resources. Moreover, it could facilitate the storage, conformity, and update of educational materials within department.
