Introduction :
Many international and national researches evidenced that drawing Zentangle® has multiple clinical benefits to relieve depressive symptoms including calming an anxious mind and cultivating moment-to-moment awareness. In Hong Kong, no study was found to examine the effectivenss of drawing Zentangle® towards mentally-ill clients.
Objectives :
The aim is to study the preceived helpfulness and applicability after mindfulness-based Zentangle® Class in local psychiatric hospital.
Methodology :
The project started from May 2017 and ended to November 2018. The 4 sessions, taught by psychiatric nurse with a qualification of Certified Zentangle® Teacher, which covered the introductory session, eight core steps of drawing Zentangle® methods, mindfulness mediation and peer to peer appreciation. Participants who had completed four sessions were invited to participate Focus-group interview on the last session. Using a semi-structured interview guideline, the interviewers initially asked the participants open-ended questions relating to their preceived helpfulness and applicability. The 60-minutes interviews were video-taped with written consent. The data was performed the process of coding. Related pattern were combined and catalogued into themes. Emerging themes were woven together to form comphrehensive picture.
Result & Outcome :
The 35 participants (M:7, F:28) were successfully recruited. They completed 4 sessions and attended focus group interview. After coding, the common themes were drawn as follows: relaxation, increasing concentration, let go, comfortable, peaceful and attentive. Hence, the participants' narrative had reminded us about the clincial effectiveness of drawing Zentangle®.
