With enhancement in primary health care service and promotion on early detection and intervention of diseases, there was a steady growth on the needs for Occupational Therapy (OT) services in General Out-Patient Clinic (GOPC). In order to maintain the quality of service upon increasing patient loading and the time constrain, using I-pad as a multimedia learning platform for cumulative traumatic diseases was launched in KWC Kowloon West Cluster Out-patient Clinics (KW GOPC) from Aug 2017 onward.
Objectives :
- To incorporate I-pad media as learning platform in additional to routine therapist individual consultation session - To enhance patient's learning and enable revision via I-pad video while waiting for therapist’s cosultation - To facilitate therapist in better utilization of consultation time
Methodology :
Prior to OT consultation, patients with cumulative traumatic diseases of upper limb were arranged to have revision on the content of previous OT sessions using I-pad during the waiting period of consultation. A satisfaction survey using a five-point Likert scale questionnaire on the following areas: 1) duration of the education program; 2) clearness of the content; 3) comprehensiveness of the information; 4) helpfulness in understanding the disease; 5) effectiveness of incorporating I-pad program in therapist’s consultation; 6) overall satisfaction on the I-pad program.
Result & Outcome :
362 patients (293 females) with mean age of 54 years old (SD= 10.5) had completed questionnaires during the period of Aug 2017 to Apr 2018. 96% of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with the use of I-pad media as additional learning platform. 87% of patients agreed the I-pad content was clear and 86% regarded the information comprehensive. 97% of patients agreed I-pad revision could help them in better disease management. 97% of patients agreed that incorporation of I-pad program in therapist’s consultation could increase the effectiveness of treatment outcome. These preliminary findings were promising. Extending I-pad as multimedia learning platform in educational programs to other disease types would be suggested in future service improvement.
