Introduction :
According to the feedback from the newly graduated nurses, they expressed their worries about pain management which is crucial for post-operative patients. In order to strengthen their competency in this aspect, education programs were initiated aiming to improve knowledge on pain management among nurses in Department of Surgery.
Objectives :
1.To enhance knowledge of pathophysiology of pain, pain assessment and management among surgical nurses 2.To strengthen their competency related to post-operative pain management 3.To evaluate the effectiveness of education program in improving knowledge of pain assessment and management
Methodology :
Two in-service education programs namely “Pathophysiology of pain” and “Pain assessment and management” were provided to surgical nurses in September and November 2018. One hour classroom teaching assisted with electronic apparatus was held for each topic and all surgical nurses with different clinical experiences were welcomed to join. Immediate pre and post surveys on corresponding topic were given to the participants to evaluate their knowledge on pain and their comments on the training they received.
Result & Outcome :
For the course on “Pathophysiology of Pain”, 15 participants were being assessed. The average results of pre-test was 58.1% and significantly increased to 92% in the post test. There were 20 participants attending “Pain Assessment and Management” program. After the program, the participants were able to answer the questions from 75% (pre-test) to 89.4% (post-test) and showed 14.4% increase by answering the questions. On course evaluation, all participants agreed and 33% of them strongly agreed that the content of the training was practical to be used in the workplace and the method of teaching has enhanced their maximum. Moreover, they all agreed that the lectures were presented clearly and the course has been run in a well-organized manner. Most importantly, participants felt more confidential in handling post-operative pain. As the participants shown great improvement in knowledge on pain management after the programs, it is recommended to provide the programs yearly with updated information to surgical nurses so as to strengthen their competency.
