Introduction :
As family physicians, we play a leading role in health promotion by engaging in health education and screening with our community partners.
Objectives :
(1) To bring better health to our community by means of educational platforms and health checks; (2) To enhance partnership with local doctors and primary schools for health promotion; (3) To engage junior staff in caring elderlies through a community service project.
Methodology :
1) Certificate course for doctors working in Yau Tsim Mong area from May to Sep 2017 and 2018 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital; (2) School outreach program was conducted from Sep to Oct 2017 for students from 5 different primary schools to promote healthy lifestyle; (3) Community Service Day (CSD) for residents in Kowloon City district: partnering with HKMA and HKCFP, a public health talk on cardiovascular disease prevention with on-site basic health parameters screening was held at HAHO on 3rd Dec 2017. (4) Health Promotion Day (HPD) for “soon-to-be-old” parents and school staff: together with Kowloon City District Primary Schools School Heads Association, a similar CSD health talk and screening was conducted at Alliance Primary School (Whampoa) on 14th Apr 2018. (5) Community service for the elderlies: organized by Hong Kong Elite Athletes Association, this event assembled visits to over 2500 “elder orphans" on 12th Nov 2017 and 11th Nov 2018
Result & Outcome :
A certificate course of 15 lectures were delivered (in 5 sessions) for local doctors in 2017 and 2018. Over 160 doctors enrolled for the course in both years. Over 1500 primary school students attended the School Outreach Program. Students were taught to keep a balanced diet with appropriate exercises. 107 participants attended the CSD. 130 individuals turned up at the HPD. Doctor volunteers helped to explain the health screening results (BP, H’stix, urine protein and BMI) with the participants one by one. 28 members of our department visited over 20 senior citizens in the lower social economic class in 2017, while 32 attended in 2018.
