Introduction :
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(CPR) is a critical procedure and every second count in life-saving in the hospital setting. Despite uncommon in the department of psychiatry, a standardized E-trolley, and competent staff member equipped with updated knowledge and skills are vitals. The challenges are how to keep the staff members and the equipment up to hospital standard. Thus a project namely 'CPR Enhancement Program in Psychiatric Unit of Shatin Hospital' has evolved in 2018. The goal of this project is to strengthen nurses's competence in providing effective emergency care by efficient use of resuscitation equipment.
Objectives :
1. To ensure resuscitation equipment in E-Trolley being completed and well-maintained in hospital standard. 2. To enhance staff's familiarity with the items and layout of E-Trolley.
Methodology :
1. A surprise audit on the E-Trolley across wards in the department of psychiatry organised in June 2018. 2. A quiz for nurse's familiarity with the E-Trolley items layout and related updated information was carried out in a cross-sectional designed based on 17th Aug 2018.
Result & Outcome :
In the Suprise E-Trolley Audit, the compliance rate of the E-trolley items was range from 78%-100%. In the quiz, total 42 nursing staffs finished the quiz. The results in Part A indicated their familiarity on the E-trolley item varying from 36% to 100% (average = 73%). Surprisingly, it reflected those nurses with 5-10 years clinical experience obtained a relatively low mark (average = 59%). In addition, the results in part B indicated their familiarity with any updated change in the E-trolley items varying from 37.5% to 87.5%. It reflected some nurses were not aware of those items have been updated for a while. This program leads to recommendations for improvement: 1. To conduct surprise audit on E-trolley annually. 2. To arrange quiz to nurse on the knowledge of E-trolley annually. 3. Nurse should take turn to carry out the routine E-trolley checking in order to get familiar with all items in the trolley. 4. Education and training particularly to the identified target group of nurses(5-10 years clinical experience)should be enhanced. 5. An electronic communication platform, such as iHosp, is suggested to record every updated change and act as quick reference for staffs.
