Introduction :
To provide quality and safe nursing care to patients, there are Nursing Standards and Guidelines established in the Hospital Authority (HA) as practice standard requirement and guidance. For a long time, the access to these documents had been confined to HA offices or hospitals. HA nurses could access to electronic version via computers with intranet connection or printed version in the clinical area. In view that mobile applications are commonly used nowadays especially in the young generation (a significant portion of nursing workforce), the Nursing App (the App) project was initiated to provide a better and more convenient of nursing information access.
Objectives :
The App had 4 main objectives including (1) to facilitate practice reference at point-of-care, (2) to facilitate clinical teaching and coaching at bed side (especially to junior or new nursing staff), (3) to enable access in non-clinical area, (4) to promote use of mobile device in clinical area.
Methodology :
It was observed that the access to nursing information might not be possible under the existing channels owing to the busy clinical operation. With the input of nursing representatives from various generations and the collaboration with IT, the App was developed and supported in personal devices (either iOS or Android platform) and leveraging HR App to secure the staff authentication. As such, HA nurses can access to the nursing information anytime and anywhere with intranet or internet connection. Personalized features had been added in the App to enhance the user experience e.g. searching memory, bookmarking. Furthermore, the top viewed and rated documents would be known as a highlight, alert or reference to users. Prompt notification message in the App could increase awareness to ad hoc or ultra-important information as well as to enhance communication with frontline nurses.
Result & Outcome :
Upon 3 weeks’ implementation since 20th December 2018, there were 3,279 nurses (contributing 11.7% population in HA nursing manpower) had downloaded and activated the App. Positive feedbacks and suggestions were received. Enrichment and evaluation to the App would be kept for continuous improvement.
