Introduction :
Oro-pharyngeal and naso-pharyngeal suctioning is an emergency procedure to remove of secretion to clear airway and maintained upper airway patency. It is time consuming to prepare suction equipment such as sterile water or bowel in treatment room before or after suction by nurses. Therefore, training on preset suction set for supporting staff is aim to enhance nurses be more efficiently in suctioning procedure
Objectives :
To standardize the procedure for preset suction set
To prepare the workflow and information sheet for preset suction set
To enhance supporting staff competence by individual assessment such as correct patient with correct individual suction tray with valid open and expiry date
To enhance nurses be more efficiently in suctioning procedure
Methodology :
To standardize all procedures and take photos to prepare workflow and information sheet
To invite supporting staff to learn how to preset suction set
To assess supporting staff individually by return demonstration to maintain the standard for preset suction set
To review periodically on the effectiveness and performance of preset suction set by supporting staff
To collect the feedback from nursing staff on preset suction set by supporting staff after 1 months trial
Result & Outcome :
After the trial, nearly 96% of 22 frontline nurses agreed that time could be saved in suctioning from preset suction set by supporting staff. Nearly 96% of 22 frontline nurses also expressed that preset suction set by supporting staff, suction procedure could be more efficiently during emergency situation
